Market Weighton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, is ideally placed between York and Hull, being about 20 miles from each. It was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book when known as Wicstun and is thought to have been the site of a Roman Camp called Delgovicia. The town also includes the Londesborough Arms which was an old 18th century coaching Inn. In the middle of the 19th century it made full use of its location to draw in the crowds to its inaugural race meeting on Friday 6th March 1857 on a course on the Selby High Road. The opening Market Weighton Stakes over 4 miles was won by Deceitful, owned by Mr Holliday. Such was the success of the first meeting that racing was organised for each of the next 2 years, the final meeting taking place on Monday 14th March 1859. |
